| There are a number of beneficial bacteria, yeast, and protozoa that are required by the intestinal tract. It has been estimated that there are actually several hundred different species of microbes needed for healthy intestinal function! |
There are many reasons the normal intestinal flora might become depleted, including:
- Antibiotic (drugs that kill bacteria), antifungal (drugs that kill fungi and yeast), and antiprotozoal (drugs that kill organisms such as Giardia and Malaria) drug use
- Chronic diarrhea
- Chronic constipation
- Poor diet
- Maldigestion and malassimilation
- Colitis
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Use of drugs that inhibit the immune system
For years, studies have shown that supplementing the intestinal tract with beneficial bacteria could be very helpful. There are actually thousands of scientific papers that have studied this issue. Research papers published over 30 years ago showed the beneficial effects of bacterial supplementation.
Lactobacillus acidophilus has been extensively studied, and consistently shown to be beneficial to the intestinal tract. Also commonly called acidophilus, lactobacillus has two problems as a suitable supplement for bacterial replacement. First, it is not stable on the shelf, and many products have no live lactobacillus left by the time the consumer purchases the product1! Second, lactobacillus acidophilus is killed off in a highly acidic environment. The stomach is extremely acidic and the vast majority of lactobacillus die in the stomach before they have a chance to reach the small intestine where they are needed. The Lactobacillus acidophilus in this formula has been stabalized to remain active without refrigeration. Larger numbers of organisms are included to help get enough bacteria through the stomach and into the small intestine.
Some of the bacteria in Healthy Flora are far more acid resistant that Lactobacillus acidphilus. The Lactobacillus rhamnosus in this formula, for example, is more acid resistant, passing into the intestinal tract more readily.
Bifidobacterium lactis has been shown in studies to benefit the intestinal tract flora. Bifidobacterium longum is a normal intestinal organisms that can be helpful in animals being given antibiotics and antifungal therapies.
