Ulcinex
is a herbal combination remedy patterned after Traditional Chinese
herbal medicine. In our experience it is a
remarkable product that seems to be very effective with inflammation
of the stomach, small intestine and in healing ulcers. Some
of the herbs are not well known as Chinese herbs |

Indications:
Ulcinex is used to
heal the stomach and small intestinal mucosal lining. This will improve
digestion, allowing food to pass through the stomach and into the small
intestine at a more normal rate, thus reducing acid indigestion and a
desire to vomit.
Ulcinex is very helpful
at healing stomach ulcers as well.
| Ulcinex for
dogs and cats:
- Dogs and
cats that routinely vomit food or bile - This often happens several
hours after eating
- Animals that
have a diagnosis of gastric ulcers
- Animals on
drugs that produce stomach or intestinal inflammation - These
drugs include Nonsteroidals (eg. Rimadyl), aspirin, steroids,
prednisone, chemotherapy for cancer
|
Western veterinary
medicine will treat vomiting with products that decrease acid production
("H2" blockers such as Tagamet® and Pepcid®).
Also stomach motility modifiers are used, drugs that empty the food out
of the stomach rapidly. Metoclopromide (Reglan®) is the
most common drug that is used for this.
The problem with this
approach is that:
- The acid that is
produced in the stomach is required for digestion of proteins. Decreasing
its production will decrease digestion.
- Pushing food through
the stomach rapidly, requiring the pancreas to work excessively to digest
the food.
- Food passes into
the small intestine before it has been predigested by the stomach. The
food is never digested well, robbing the body of needed nutrients.
- The underlying
problem is never healed, creating a cycle where your animal will become
sicker over time.
Ulcinex will help
eliminate this unhealthy cycle by promoting a health stomach mucosal lining,
thus promoting digestion, decreasing acid indigestion and diminishing
vomiting and regurgitation.
Rationale:
Corydalis
Chinese medicine
considers this an herb that moves Qi and breaks up blood stagnation.
This means it will reduce pain, and restore normal flow of blood to
areas of blood stagnation. One active ingredient, Dehydrocorydaline,
has been shown to treat stomach and small intestinal ulcers.
Astragalus
Astragulus is an
immune booster, especially for the "Middle Burner" meaning
the stomach, spleen and pancreas. It will help maintain normal blood
flow, improve digestion and enhance intestinal mucosal immune function.
It is a tonic that improves the functions of the stomach and pancreas.
Tienchi Ginseng Root
The stomach and
intestines require normal blood movement for healthy function. Ulcers
and inflammation will cause clotting and eventual lead to ulcers. This
herb helps move and invigorate the blood, helping heal the mucosal lining
of the stomach and intestines. More technically, it has saponins which
inhibit phospholipase A2 activity. Phospholipase is a cellular enzyme
that binds to the surface of membranes during inflammation and causes
their destruction.
Zhejiang Fritillaria
Bulb
Fritillaria is antiintlammatory,
cooling the heat of an inflamed stomach lining.
Licorice Root
Licorice is widely
used to heal ulcers in both Chinese medicine and Western medicine. Licorice
heals ulcers by stimulating the secretion of the protective mucus and
in enhancing the production of new stomach lining cells. Licorice also
improves mucilage within the stomach. Mucilage has an important protectant
property as it acts as a "bandage" to heal ulcers.
Gambir Leaf and Stem
Gambir is a rich
source of bioflavonoids and tannins. Tannins are drying and healing
to the inflamed stomach. It helps with collagen synthesis and immune
stimulation. In total, the astringent propertied is antimicrobial, collagen
helps in the healing process and the immune stimulation helps local
gut immunity.
Brown's Lily Bulb
Brown's Lily Bulb
is a yin herb. Yin is the moistening, healing aspect. It will calm irritability
and nervousness and helps with the emotional aspect of ulcer formation.
Bletilla Root
Bletilla Root has
abundant amounts of mucilage. Mucilage, as previously stated acts as
gel or bandage to heal the lining of the inflamed tissues. It is one
of the more important ingredients of this formula to relieve symptoms
of heartburn.
Cuttlefish shell
Sepia is more of
a European herb. It has a high mineral content. Minerals such as calcium
are known to settle an upset stomach and helps with acid indigestion.
In Western medicine it is considered an antacid. Homeopathy has long
understood that Sepia has many beneficial effects on mental health,
and can be expected to help with the emotional aspects of ulcer development,
acid indigestion, and gastritis.
