Yunnan Paiyao is a Traditional Chinese herbal Patent medicine reported to contain the following ingredients:
Notoginseng root (Panax pseudoginseng, San Qi)
Chinese Yam
Wild Yam
Geranium plant
Lesser Galangal root
Ox Gall
Indications:
Pseudoginseng (Notoginseng, Panax notoginseng, San Qi) is well known as a hemostatic herb, meaning it arrests bleeding. It will invoigorate the blood as well as build blood. The other herbs in this formula assist notoginseng in this effect. Lesser Galangal root is a tonic for the blood (it also has anti-malaria properties). Chinese Yam invigorates Yin and Qi (it moistens the body and tonifies the blood). The other proprietary herbs in this formula likewise build and tonify the blood.
Yunnan Paiyao is best known for its ability to arrest bleeding. Its ability to decrease bleeding is mostly due to its effect on the liver. The liver makes clotting factors, and Pseudoginseng enhances the liver's ability to produce clotting factors. It is best used for 2-3 days before you need it and continuing after you need it.
If given for surgeries, it often will diminish bleeding dramatically, making the surgery safer and far more effective.
